The Universe’s Padded Playground

I dreamt.

I was in space looking at the Earth and the Moon. A great voice spoke to me and said, “Gaze upon the Earth. It is a padded, safe playground compared to the rest of the planets in the Universe. The structure of the solar system and composition of the Earth protects it from solar storms, meteors and radiation. See its magnetic field, atmosphere and core.

“Look at Earth’s ecosystem! It is a self-sustaining cycle that wastes nothing, it is perfect. Every single living and non-living thing has a purpose and a role within the ecosystem.

“Look at the Moon! The Moon is a quarter of the Earth’s diameter and see how it orbits at a perfect distance. See how it makes the ocean currents move so that the warm and cold water are cycled throughout the planet. The Moon helps regulate the Earth’s temperature. The Earth’s temperatures are mild and temperate. There are seasons to provide periods of growth and rest.

“Look at the Sun! See the Earth’s star and compare it to all the other stars in the Universe. It is stable. Not too hot and not too cold. See how perfect of a distance the Earth is from the Sun. If the Earth was any closer or farther, life would perish.”

I was then transported somewhere else in space, I don’t know where. I looked around me and there were billions of stars shining.

The voice said, “You have absolutely no idea how perfect the Earth is. Look at all the planets in the Universe. They are like grains of sand. Yet not one of them is capable of holding life due to one factor being slightly off. See the Universe, see how hostile it is towards life. See your planet, Earth, a grain of sand in the sea and see how lucky you are to be living here. You are living in a padded playground, a paradise.”

I awoke.
