The Wanderers

I dreamt.

Note: The world in my dream was infinite. Instead of living on a sphere, the world was a plane that stretched on infinitely in all four directions. Similar to Minecraft.

I was an African-American man. I was on a cruise ship with my wife and child. News about a disease outbreak on the ship was spreading. In order to distract everyone, there was a popular jazz band playing in an auditorium for free. My family and I sat in the first row on the left end cap. Everyone crowded into the auditorium. Some people sat along the stairs and sides because there weren’t enough seats.

As the band was playing, I could not stop thinking about the disease. I began to have a massive anxiety attack. I tried to keep it hidden but I was sweating profusely and my eyes were bugging out. I made eye contact with the trumpet player while he was playing and he could see the raw, primal fear in my eyes. His eyes became filled with fear and he faltered. We broke eye contact and he closed his eyes and quickly recovered. We both did not want to cause mass panic so we held our emotions in.

The disease spread and many of the people within a few hundred miles were infected. Those who were infected had greenish-grey skin, shuffled around and did not have great control over their bodies. They tended to travel in groups, sometimes in large herds. If they encountered a living or non-living thing that moved too fast, they would turn into rabid animals and attack. They did not linger in one place very long so they were called “Wanderers.” They all seemed to be wandering to the north.

A radio broadcast went out advising any survivors to keep all the lights in their house on 24/7 and do not cover windows with curtains, blinds or anything else. If there is a room with no windows, then keep the door wide open. If Wanderers are nearby, stay still and do not make any loud noises. The Wanderers like to look into houses. If they cannot see into a house they will break in and look over every square foot of the house.

My family and I were inside our home. It was nighttime. I was crouching at the window by my front door, looking across the street into my neighbor’s home. I could see their family slowly moving around the second story, preparing for bed. In the distance, a herd of Wanderers were coming our direction.

The next day, I looked around and did not see any Wanderers so I peered into my neighbor’s house again. There wasn’t any movement at all. This was strange because they are usually up at this hour. I decided to go outside and check in on them. As I was approaching their house, I heard an ungodly screech behind me. My neighbor and their family were turned into brownish-red chimpanzee-like creatures. I ran back into my house and closed the door. They started pounding furiously at the door and windows, screaming wildly.

After a few minutes, they lost interest and left. It seems they were infected with a different type of disease. I looked around our neighborhood and saw that we were the last remaining family in the area. My daughter told me we need to leave and find a different civilization. No one else is here anymore and we’ll eventually run out of food.

My dream jumped forward.

My family and I had travelled far south and we came across a small fishing village at the edge of an Asian civilization. The land was covered in gentle, rolling hills covered in fog. It was a grey overcast day. The people in the village were peacefully going about their lives. It seemed like the Wanderers had not come to this area.

My daughter and wife were so relieved and ecstatic. We finally escaped the Wanderers. We made our way down to the village.

I awoke.
